Collide: Part 1 - The Lady at the Elevator

Jase is the kind of guy who likes mornings.

He thrives at the promise that comes with the new day.

He springs out of bed and pads down the hall toward the bathroom.

Steam billowing from the shower.

The calming scent of lemongrass body wash and citrus shampoo.

Clean shaven, sparkly smile and subtle aftershave.

He gets ready for work.

He brushes back his thick dark hair with long fingers,

Adjusts his favourite tie, tucks in his shirt, slips on his suit jacket.

Grabs his leather satchel and he’s out the door.

Jase enjoys his short walk to the train station.

He loves to walk past Mrs. Magnus’s house,

He says hello to her old Golden Retriever, Hans.

Fluffy tail wagging.

On his 7:30am train, earphones in, catching up with the news.

After five stops, he looks up to see a child staring at him with curious eyes.

They make faces at each other, laughing and smiling endlessly.

He hops off at his stop, taps out of the gates and into the street.

At his regular coffee shop, he nods at Jinnie behind the counter,

“The usual?” she asks.

A large flat white with an extra shot.

He answers with a big smile and a bobble-head type gesture.

Off he goes again, almost skipping, on the uneven pavement,

Greeting every soul he meets,

“Hey how’s it going?”

“Good morning. How’s your day?”

All met with expected generic replies,

“Good.”

“Ok.”

He enters the foyer of his office building,

Heading for the elevators.

Sipping his flat white, he pulls out his earphones and looks up.

Oh, he stares, slightly stunned.

“Morning! How’s it going?”

He says softly yet excitedly to the woman waiting for the elevator too.

She looks up, an attempt at a smile pulls at the corner of her mouth.

“Oh…um…it could be better I guess,” she sighs quietly.

She looks down at her boots.

“Oh that’s really gr…..wait….”

Jase is caught off guard.

It could be better?

He turns and faces her.

Her face seems small.

Pale skin, delicate and soft.

Black hair flowing down her back.

It covers part of her face, hiding her from the world.

She looks so sad.
